The Unexpected Value of New Windows

Allow me to give you an example of what happened when I decided to replace my windows for my first home. The only reason I wanted to replace all the windows was because some of them just looked a little older, worn, and had some condensation in the panes. I wanted to have a nice grid pattern to all the windows to match and I wanted them to open and close nicely. After getting the windows replaced, which was done in the middle of summer, I was stunned to immediately realize that the house, 

especially the parts I would hang out in, suddenly seemed much cooler. Outdoors it was over 105 degrees, but inside it was nice and cool. Wow! So, the windows did that? Indeed, my electric bill the next month was cut in almost half. I couldn’t believe it. Even when the window company told me that would happen, I sort of thought, yeah yeah, just please make it pretty. But once it was in, I realize the huge advantage of energy savings the windows added to the house was not just talk, but a real thing.

The cost very much depends on the size and type of window, is it single, double hung, or fixed, the design, grids, dimensions, type of window (vinyl, wood, aluminum), color of the window frame (black is more expensive), and if it has privacy film or if it’s tempered. Same with a door as far as its dimensions, type, quality level, material, exterior or interior, any special hinges, hardware, etc and also the painting involved. With these specifications, we can estimate your window and door project.
Anyone who has to live with old windows and doors understands the value of getting new ones. It’s like night and day. The new windows will open and close easily and nicely. The locks will work. It will be clean in all its parts. And also, getting new double pane title 24 (California’s clause for energy-efficient windows), will greatly save on your air conditioning costs, sometimes by up to half! In fact, replacing all your windows may have a more dramatic impact on your electric bill than getting solar would. Also of course, it will look much nicer.
Licensed general contractors have the following advantages over non-licensed contractors or handymen. 1) They have insurance and bond that covers any potential damage to them or to the homeowner – saving you potentially thousands of dollars. 2) They generally do the work to updated modern building code, which they are required to keep up to date with. 3) They can pull any necessary permit under their business and insurance. 4) They generally have a larger online presence, so they painstakingly guard their reputation and have a higher incentive to keep customer happy, otherwise they lose valuable business!
Generally looking for the cheapest number is a recipe for disaster. When investing the money on something like basic building features in your home, you don’t want to get the lowest bid and end up with a poorly done job, and defective low-quality materials. We have seen windows installed crookedly, missing window insulation and all sorts of poor workmanship. Don’t skimp. Windows and doors don’t cost quite as much as other remodeling projects, so if you plan to change your windows and doors, plan and save accordingly!

As mentioned, you can always try to do updates yourself, however, you must be very careful about water intrusion, leaks and doing things correctly. Materials will still cost you and your time is valuable as well. Other options are financing – personal loans are often approved in just hours or a couple days for home improvement. A home equity line of credit or refinance cash out certainly can help, but if you don’t want to pull equity out, consider saving til you can afford a truly quality remodel! It is not advisable to go broke doing a remodel.
YES, despite current gas prices, if you are within 20 miles of our location in Mission Viejo, we do STILL offer free estimates. We currently do not have salesmen, we do the estimates ourselves, but we also are at the job sites and work all day in construction, running materials and overseeing jobs. We offer a window of time to come do the estimate and you will have an experienced contractor consulting with you. For us a free estimate doesn’t mean we take lightly running around offering quotes. We sometimes take hours to put together estimates and we take it very seriously.
