What is acoustic removal and how can it help you?

You may have read or heard from others that removing popcorn or acoustic ceilings is beneficial for many reasons. For one, this practice of spraying this plaster mineral material on the ceiling began in 1945 and has been regular practice up until the 1990s! It was done simply to hide natural ceiling frame and plaster imperfections and even cracking. Also, it formed extra noise barrier thus the name acoustic ceiling. And actually, wall texture was also commonly applied throughout the decades to drywall and plaster and lathe walls to also hide imperfections and add acoustic barrier. We call the various forms of texture things like orange peel and knock down. And prior to the early 1980s much of the material and mineral compound used in this textured mixture included asbestos. And asbestos is linked to terrible lung conditions and cancer when inhaled. Therefore, when removing texture in a home build prior to the early 80s where it was never done before, we now have organizations that monitor proper removal and disposal of this material. Not only was it present in this wall compound, but it was also used in other construction materials like various adhesives.

Nowadays it’s common practice in a remodeled home to remove the texture on ceilings and even walls – or at least to redo the wall texture. We use proper experts to test and remove asbestos filled texture in the process of remodeling older homes. But also, you commonly will find, once removed, imperfections that you never knew existed on the walls and ceilings, such as cracks, dents, scratches, holes and dings. This is normal and not alarming. In fact, even newly built homes will often have cracking and other imperfections after a couple years due to settling and the fact that home materials expand and contract due to weather and time.

If you’re looking for a contractor to help remodel your drywall to make it nicer, remove imperfections, and fix cracks and paint, we can help! Call us today for a free estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Home Remodeling

General drywalling a home is sort of a medium expense. It’s not as expensive as remodeling a kitchen, but quality labor in drywalling is key so if you get an estimate of $8,000 to drywall your garage, this is a very reasonable fee. Retexturing your home can get a bit pricey for sure. This process is labor intensive and hard work. So, expect to get a quote well into the tens of thousands for a proper retexturing of the home. As far as popcorn ceiling removal, there is a multi-step process. First removing the texture, then resmoothing the ceiling, sanding, fixing any cracks, priming and painting. If you’ve ever worked long hours up on a ladder with your hands above your head for long periods of time, you’ll know this isn’t easy work! A quote in the hundreds should be a red flag. Expect to pay a couple thousand for the home.
Have you ever walked into 60s or 70s home that hasn’t been updated ever? Maybe one of the first things you’ll notice is the quality of the walls and all the texture, years of painting and popcorn. Generally seeing these things immediately evokes old-fashioned, and not as clean, modern and nice. Also walls and texture tend to carry scent. They really do! So, all the years of “living” remain as a sort of stench no matter how well you clean the house. Texture buries dust and dirt. It adds considerably to your health and wellbeing, as well as mental sense of clarity to clean it up. Also plumbing, electric, framing, and vents live inside those walls and ceilings. Sometimes they have to be opened to do work and maintenance and then you will have to repair the drywall. You can’t leave your walls open.
Licensed general contractors have the following advantages over non-licensed contractors or handymen. 1) They have insurance and bond that covers any potential damage to them or to the homeowner – saving you potentially thousands of dollars. 2) They generally do the work to updated modern building code, which they are required to keep up to date with. 3) They can pull any necessary permit under their business and insurance. 4) They generally have a larger online presence, so they painstakingly guard their reputation and have a higher incentive to keep customer happy, otherwise they lose valuable business!
As mentioned, you can always try to do updates yourself, however, you must be very careful about water intrusion, leaks and doing things correctly. Materials will still cost you and your time is valuable as well. Other options are financing – personal loans are often approved in just hours or a couple days for home improvement. A home equity line of credit or refinance cash out certainly can help, but if you don’t want to pull equity out, consider saving til you can afford a truly quality remodel!
We include labor and materials into our price including drywall, drywall materials, primer and paint.
